Chapter Five

Ben still wasn’t sure why he’d made the offer. He’d like to say he was trying to do something nice for someone in pain, but he wasn’t that altruistic. The fact was Marcus was the first man his body had reacted to in years. Maybe since…he wouldn’t think about that, not tonight. Ben knew he’d said they could do this in the dark, but he wasn’t sure he could allow Marcus—anyone—to take him in the dark. That brought back the memories and he couldn’t let this guy see that.

Following him up the stairs to Marcus’s townhouse, he noted the bland exterior of the building that changed suddenly into something bright and airy when they passed through the locked security door into the lobby. There was a clerk behind a desk in front of the elevators, and Marcus greeted him with a handshake as he would a friend. The man’s face was open and friendly, but his gaze turned hard and flinty when he looked Ben up and down. But he didn’t say anything as they waited for the elevator.

Upstairs, Ben was surprised that there were only two doors on the hallway, and Marcus keyed open the one on the right. On a cop’s salary? No fucking way. A dirty cop maybe, or maybe the dead lover had money?

The question must have shown on his face, and as he hung up their coats, Marcus said, “Jeremy was a doctor. A trauma surgeon. This was what he wanted, and who was I to say no?”

This candor was something new to Ben, and he hoped Marcus wouldn’t expect it in return. He didn’t know if he could tell him everything. Not about his parents throwing him out, about the rape, about his nightmares and inability to sleep in the dark. But maybe he could find something to share, to not let this man feel like he was out there by himself.

Stepping in front of Marcus, Ben laid his hands on the man’s firm chest, and gently massaged, moving his hands in slow circles on his pecs. “I have a small apartment over near Emory. I’m in grad school there, and I’m up to my eyeballs in student loans for things my fellowship doesn’t cover. I went out with this older guy one night—I thought it was just a date. He’d talked to me at the Bob Evans over near the hospital. We went out, and ended up in bed, and he left two hundred dollars on my dresser and snuck out while I was in the shower.”

Marcus gave a cough of disbelief, and Ben spared him a small smile. He kept rubbing, and Marcus leaned back against the wall, closing his eyes in apparent pleasure. “I lost my part-time manager’s job when Borders closed. I didn’t want to wait tables, and I really wasn’t qualified to do anything else. The weird hours I needed to work around my class schedule turned most employers off, and I got to thinking about that two hundred bucks.
